DESCRIPTION: The walkers cross over Portland Island and now look out over the western coast. Below is Chesil Beach. It is a pebble beach 18 miles long and stretches north-west from Portland to West Bay. For much of its length it is separated from the mainland by an area of saline water called the Fleet Lagoon. Prior to the road being built to Weymouth it was the only way to leave the island by foot. This beach  was the grave of many sailing ships trapped by the prevailing SW winds.
